Selecting a telephone headset for your Cisco IP or Avaya IP desk phone require certain specifications. Depending on the model of your VoIP desk phone will ultimately decide which telephone headset is compatible, more information on TheHeadsetShop.com. Through my experience I find that there are only two manufactures that design telephone headsets for Cisco and Avaya phones. Plantronics and GN Netcom provide direct connect solutions for VoIP phones including Cisco and Avaya. Both Plantronics and GN Netcom telephone headsets include a QD or quick disconnect connection for connecting the proper bottom cable depending on which IP desk phone you use. This is where it can get a bit complicated so we created this blog to help simplify the selection process for the user.

CISCO IP PhonesMost Cisco IP desk phones include a modular headset jack for connecting a direct connect telephone headset. It is important to note that the modular headset jack found on IP desk phones are designed for corded headsets only and will not work with wireless headsets. Common Cisco IP phones that have built in modular headset jacks are the 6900, 7900 and 8900 series. There are two solutions for Cisco IP desk phones with built in modular jacks and they are Plantronics Cisco IP headsets or GN Netcom Direct Connect headset. Both Plantronics Cisco IP headsets and GN Netcom Direct Connect headsets include the proper bottom cable compatible with all Cisco phones with built in headset jacks.

Some Cisco IP desk phones have a circular 2.5mm headset jack which requires a different telephone headset. Cisco IP phones that have built in 2.5mm headset jacks require a 2.5mm direct connect telephone headset.

Avaya IP Phones

Avaya IP phones can get a bit complex when selecting a Plantronics direct connect headset but all GN Netcom Direct Connect headsets will work with Avaya telephones. The same requirements apply with Avaya IP phones they must include a built in modular headset jack. When selecting a Plantronics telephone headset for your Avaya IP desk phone there are two different bottom cables available which depend on the model of Avaya IP phone you are using. Plantronics Avaya headsets require either the HIS-1 or HIC-1 bottom cable along with an H-Series corded headset with quick disconnect. Some Avaya IP telephones might not have a built in headset jack and in this case would require an external amplifier such as the Plantronics M22 Vista.

If you are unsure of the type of telephone headset you require it is important to contact the manufacture or an authorized dealer for more information.
